07:00 – arrive at Wildlife Conservation Society station for a briefing with the local guide.

08:00 – birding around and inside the reservoir.

10:30 - visit Phnom Srok village and see unique silk items being created, or continue birding around the reservoir.

11:30 - home cooked Khmer lunch at local restaurant.

12:30 - explore further bird sites including dry deciduous forest, home of Eld’s Deer.

17:00 - return to your hotel in Siem Reap.

Ang Trapeang Thmor (a huge reservoir built by the Khmer Rouge, featuring extensive wet grasslands which grade into deciduous dipterocarp forest) is a vitally important place for Sarus Cranes, the tallest and most elegant of Cambodia’s water birds. Between January and the end of March, we see up to 350 of these majestic birds as they forage in fields around the man-made reservoir during the dry season. It is one of our favorite places to go birdwatching as it can always be something unexpected amongst the many water birds. Previously we have found rare visitors such as Black-necked Stork, Greater Spotted Eagle and, during March and April, Oriental Plover. In addition, this is one of the best places on Earth to see Eld’s Deer, reputed to have once fed armies across Asia, but now critically endangered and at risk of extinction.

Alongside the reservoir is the traditional Khmer village of Phnom Srok, where we can see silk being woven on a traditional loom. This provides additional income for the village women who have the rare opportunity to sell directly to you without going through a middleman – and the items produced are of exceptional quality.

Our tours are custom-made – the itineraries shown are suggestions based on our deep knowledge, or we can work with you to create your trip for your unique requirements, interests, and capabilities.
