Phnom Penh - Siem Reap

Cambodia's glorious past is represented by the Khmer empire and was situated in and around  the Angkor area and existed from the 9th c. through the 15th c. There remains today over 1,000 temples in various states of repair. Among these temples you will discover the magnificent Angkor Wat temple, the largest religious structure in the world and still used as a place of worship by our Hindu brothers and sisters. It has been compared by some to the magnificent cathedral at Chartres, France for is spiritual power and glorious architecture.  Together, these more than 1,000 temples make up the most significant example of Khmer architecture and have been dedicated as an UNESCO World Heritage Site. There is not another place on this planet that exhibits the mystery that was once a great civilization.

Your visit to our capital, Phnom Penh, will include the National Museum which houses the major collection of ancient Khmer art and artifacts, the Silver Pagoda and Wat Phnom, home of the foundation of our city. It is a charming fact that a grandmother established this beautiful city!

Once we arrive in the charming town of  Siem Reap, you will be in the heart of the Khmer/Angkor region. Here you will find the famous temples, the fabled city of Angkor Thom and the mystery of Bayon with its chiseled-in-stone "portraits". The Terrace of the Elephants and the Terrace of the Leper King are also impressive.

Ta Prohm, a former Buddhist monastery, was one of King Jayavarman VII's first major temple projects and today it is "held together" by strangler fig trees.  To get a glimpse of what is in store for you, you might want to rent the DVD, "Lara Croft, Tomb Raider" which includes a long sequence of Ta Prohm.  Of course, Angkor Wat is the glory of the late empire so you will want to spend time exploring this huge structure of mystery and great beauty.  The remainder of the trip will include a board ride to the Tonle Sap lake, the largest freshwater lake in Southeast Asia where you will discover a floating village, floating schools and even floating churches!

Day 1 - Arrival in Phnom Penh

With great pride, the people of Cambodia are waiting for you to visit their beautiful country! When you arrive in our capital city,  Phnom Penh, we will take a refreshing boat trip along the Tonle and Mekong rivers for a first glimpse of the city. Here you will discover a floating village, floating schools and even a floating church! Continue to the National Museum, home of the most extensive art and artifacts collection from the ancient civilization of Angkor.  We will also visit  the Royal Palace and Silver Pagoda complex as well.  Here your guide(s) will explain the cultural and historic heritage of the city.  As the sun begins to set, we will visit the hilltop pagoda of Wat Phnom, the site where our city was established by a grandmother and not by military conquest! A charming fact.

Overnight in Phnom Penh

Continue to Bayon, filled with mysterious smiling, rock-chiseled faces, and the tranquil Banteay Kdei temple. Enjoy an elephant ride through the temple park before returning to town for an afternoon of swimming or relaxation.

Overnight in Siem Reap

Day 4 - Siem Reap (B)

The floating village of Kampong Phluck is situated  on the Tonle Sap Lake, Southeast Asia's largest body of freshwater.  Here we will rest for a picnic lunch on one of the floating houses and then continue on to the  lovely, pink sandstone temple of Banteay Srey, home to some of the finest examples of classical Khmer art.  We will enjoy the  sunset at the Pre Rup temple. Upon returning to Siem Reap, dine on delicious cuisine at a renowned Khmer restaurant.
