Day I - Prasat Banan, Bamboo Train, Phnom Sampov, Wat Ek Phnom, Kamping Pouy Lake Water Reservior and Sek Sak Resort

Private transfer from Siem Reap to Battembeng
- in the morning, after breakfast at your hotel, you will be met and welcomed, and then picked up and transferred onward by private luxury A/C vehicle to Battambang.

Battambang
was established as an important trading city with around 2,500 residents in the 18th century. The population was centred along a single road parallel to the Sangkae River (Stung Sangkae). In 1795 Siam (modern-day Thailand) annexed much of north western Cambodia including the current provinces of Banteay Meanchey, Battambang, Oddar Meanchey, Pailin, and Siem Reap into the province of Inner Cambodia. The Siamese ruled Battambang as a provincial capital through the Thai-speaking Khmer Aphaiwong family, a branch of the Khmer royal family, which governed for six generations until 1907 when the province was ceded to the French to be reunited with Cambodia as part of the French Indochina colony.

Following colonization by the French, an urban layout was developed which resulted in an enlarged French colonial town. This first attempt at modernization resulted in well-defined streets laid in a grid pattern, building of urban structures and three main streets parallel to the Sangkae River, and the linking of both banks by the construction of two bridges in 1917. Military and prison facilities were also erected. Nineteen years later, a second urban development plan was implemented with a newly constructed railway linking Battambang to Phnom Penh. The urban structures were extended to the west of the town creating urban hubs oriented around the railway station. The large residential villas and public buildings built during this period of French development significantly changed the landscape of the previously remote city. A subsequent third urban development plan for Battambang involved the north, east and south of the city. This vast undertaking, which required long-term planning to integrate all of the previous work, resulted in a modern provincial capital that was by far the most developed region of Cambodia outside of Phnom Penh.

Much later, more infrastructure and public facilities were built under the modernization program of the Cambodian government led by Prince Sihanouk. Several provincial departments, a court house and other public buildings were added on both sides of the river. Textile and garment factories were built by French and Chinese investors, the Battambang Airport was constructed, and the railway line was extended to the Thai border at Poipet. To serve the cultural needs of the population, numerous schools and a university were built as well as a sports centre, museum and an exhibition hall.

Prasat Banan - continue visit to Prasat Phnom Banan temple, Adapts the architecture of the mid-11th century and the end of the 12th century; the temple was first built by King Dharanindravarman II (1050–1066) and was completed in its final form by the King Jayavarman VII (1181–1220). The temple is located on the top of a mountain approximately 400-meter-high located at Koh Tey 2 commune, Banan District. It can be reached by traveling 15 kilometers from the provincial town by the provincial road No 155, which runs parallel to the Sangker River. In the valley, there is Ku Teuk and two main natural wells, namely: Bit Meas and Chhung or Chhung Achey.

Nory (Bamboo Train) - continue to take bamboo train.

Phnom Sampov - continue to Phnom Sampov, the main article: Killing caves of Phnom Sampeau.
Is a natural resort located along the National Road No 57 (the former National Road No10) at Sam Puoy commune (the high land more than 100 meters high) and 12 kilometers from the provincial town of Battambang. On the top of Sam Puoy mountain, there is a temple and three natural wells, namely Pkar Slar, Lo Khuon and Ak Sopheak. Next to Sam Puoy mountain, there are some mountains, and natural sites like Phnom Trung Moan, Phnom Trung Tea and Phnom Neang Rum Say Sork. These mountains relate to the Cambodia folk legend of Reach Kol Neang Rum Say Sork.

Wat Ek Phnom - continue to visit Wat Ek Phnom. Adapts the architecture of the 11th century and was built in 1027 during the reign of King Suryavarman I (1002–1050). It is located at Piem Ek commune 14 kilometers from the provincial town.

Kamping Puoy Lake - continue to Kamping Puoy Lake, Located between two mountains, named Phnom Kul or Phnom Ta Nget and Phnom Kamping Puoy, at Ta Nget village, Ta Kriem Commune is 35 kilometers from the provincial town. Kamping Puoy lake is 1,900 meters wide, 19 kilometers long and can load 110,000,000 cubic metres. It is famous for its giant lotus flowers whose fiber is spun and weaved to make a new organic fabric. These activities employ more than 20 underprivileged women around the Lake.

Lunch at local restaurant (at your own costs)

Sek Sak Resort - continue to Sek Sak Resort. A natural resort which has been popular since before the civil war, Sek Sak stretches along the river bank with plants, trees and bamboo stretching 500 meters in length. Personalised tour of Cambodia that exceeded our high expectations

We had visited Siem Reap before using Sophoan's firm. This time we asked for a personalised tour of Cambodia covering Phnom Penh, Battambang and our favourites in Angkor and beyond. Sophoan's descriptions in Phnom Penh will stay with us for life and his personal experiences made it all very real. We had a very specific tour of Angkor, but he breathed new life into our personal favourites and was knowledgeable about the new locations too - Beng Melea is definitely worth the trip! We had a great time and Sophoan definitely played his part in that. We could not recommend him highly enough.

Great Travel Company for South East Asia

I traveled with a group of 43 people through South East Asia for 4 months and used Mr. Sophoan Rath's travel company for most all of our travel and we had all great experiences!!

Below is a detailed review of each time we traveled with Mr. Sophoan:

November 11th Phnom Penh to Bangkok:

Everything went really smoothly and great! From Phnom Penh to the border on the bus and the minibus there was enough space for everyone and all of the bags! From the Border to Bangkok there was also enough space for everyone and all of the bags on each of the mini vans! Also having you there to translate and help direct us through the border was very helpful, and your english is very good! All in all was a very good trip!

January 6th Bangkok to Siem Reap:

This whole exchange was very smooth and very enjoyable for all. Being able to go all the way through from Bangkok to Siem Reap on the same bus and not have to carry our things through border control was very nice and we were all excited when we heard about this! On the bus and the mini van that we took all the way through there was enough space for everyone and all of the bags. Also having you there again to direct and translate was very helpful to the whole ordeal and making everything go smoothly! This trip went very well and was a very good experience!

February 6th Battambang to Kompong Thom:

This trip also went very smoothly! The pickup of the other 2 passengers in Siem Reap on the way went very well! There was enough space on the minibus for all of us and our bags. Also the driver spoke good enough english so that we could communicate a few things like stopping for lunch and things like that which was helpful! All in all this trip went well and was a good experience!

February 26th Kompong Thom to Siem Reap (4 to Battambang):

This trip went pretty well. The minivan from Kompong Thom to Siem Reap was a little tight for the 10 of us with all of our stuff, but for sure wasn't the worst by any means. After the 4 left in Siem Reap towards Battambang we had an easy time getting to the hostel we were staying at which was really good! The 4 that went to Battambang had a good experience and had no complaints!

March 4th Battambang to Siem Reap:

This trip went well as far as I am aware. I got no complaints or feedback of any sort. It was nice to have the extra car with the bus to haul all of the bags with everyone which was good! They made really good time from Battambang to which was really good! Then the whole ordeal with one of our guys leaving a lap top in the car went really well! Thanks so much again for helping us get that to us at the airport!

Knowledgeable, hard-working, and personable

Sophoan was amazing! My friend and I were in charge of getting 55 people to cross the Cambodia border to Thailand which is a long border crossing. He was immediately personable and he was so knowledgeable about the details about how to fill out the deportation cards, etc. He brought a lot of clarity to something that could be quite confusing. He also was so hard working. When our group split up since some were ready to cross sooner, he would help my group and then run back to help the group behind. He was an incredible blessing and he made our border crossing so much easier and fun. Even though we only spent about 2 and half hours with him, he almost felt like family.

Sophoan Was Incredible!

We had a group of 40 people and needed to get from Siem Reap, Cambodia to Chiang Mai, Thailand and Sophoan was absolutely fantastic. After just a few emails he had everything planned for us and within our budget as well. When the day came for us to leave, he personally came with the bus and helped load all of our luggage. When we crossed the border, he personally led us through what would have been a much more complicated task if he wasn't there.

A memorable trip!

I was referred to Sophoan by my sister who highly recommended him for my trip to Siem Reap and I’m thankful for that. My son and I enjoyed the service and hospitality provided by him. Besides being patient and humble, Sophoan is a very experienced and responsible English-speaking tour guide; indeed very helpful throughout our stay in Siem Reap. He is always smiling and also very knowledgeable about all aspects of Cambodia, from the historical facts to the local culture, therefore providing insightful explanations. We would certainly engage him again for our next visit and highly recommend him for those visiting Cambodia. You can trust that you are in good hands.

Poan is the perfect guide.

My first trip to Cambodia was a few years ago and toured around the Siem Reap area and Poan was an amazing guide, the best I've ever had. He is genuinely friendly and is very professional. I've toured other areas of Cambodia on subsequent trips and again Poan made all the arrangements and we had a great time. He knowledge is so complete and adds many insights to the trip by explaining about Khmer history and culture.

I've had the opportunity to travel to many countries and had many guides throughout my years of traveling. Poan is the best there is! Richard C.
