Day I - Koh Ker and Beng Melea Excursion

Koh Ker
– you will be met and welcomed by our English speaking guide at your preferred pick-up location and then transferred onward to visit Koh Ker, a former capital of the Khmer Kingdom, pre-dating Angkor, and is home to many spectacular 10th century temples. A brief interruption: the exception took place in 928AD when, for reasons that remain unclear, there was a disruption in the royal succession. King Jayavarman IV moved the capital 100 km from Angkor north to Koh Ker, where it remained for 20 years. When the capital returned to Angkor, it centered not at Phnom Bakheng as it had before, but further east at the new state-temple of Pre Rup (961AD).

Lunch at local restaurant (at your own costs)

Beng Melea
- continue to visit Beng Melea. Sprawling jungle temple covering over one square kilometer, the temple is largely overrun by vegetation and very lightly touristed, giving it an adventours, ‘lost temple’ feel. Photographers: trees growing from the broken towers and galleries offer some of the best ‘tree in temple’ shots aside from Ta Prohm. Constructed in a distinctly Angkor Wat style under the same king that built Angkor Wat, Beng Melea preceded and may have served as a prototype of sorts for Angkor Wat. Though there are some lintel and doorway carving, there are no bas-relief and the carvings are comparatively sparse. When the temple was active, the walls may have been covered, painted or had frescos. In its time, Beng Melea was at the crossroads of several major highways that ran to Angkor, Koh Ker, Preah Vihear (in northern Cambodia) and northern Vietnam.

During the night of your stay in Siem Reap, you can enjoy Siem Reap nightlife, night markets, foods and other fun activities in Siem Reap downtown, Pub Street areas and city formerly French colonial head quarter.

Return and drop you off at your preferred destination.

Third Memorable Trip with Poan!

Poan (Sophoan) was my personal guide in Siem Reap during my visit in 2010 and 2012. Since my travel buddy wanted to visit Angkor Wat, I sent Poan an email to inform him approximately 4-5 months in advance, to ensure we secured a spot on his busy calendar!

Planning the itinerary with Poan was easy. He responded quickly and made recommendations based on our preferences. As mentioned, this was my third visit but the first for my friend. We needed a mixture of popular tourist favorites as well as remote temples to tour.

This time we ventured all the way to Preah Vihear, near the Thai and Laos border. Poan made all the arrangements including a very good lunchbox from Blue Pumpkin (since he knew I am a picky eater). Very satisfactory! The only complaint I had was that we should have visited Beng Mealea first to conserve sunlight and then go to Preah Vihear after lunch. This way, the sun would set on the drive back and not while we were visiting Beng Mealea. I felt we didn't spend enough time at my favorite temple (which turned out to my travel buddy's favorite too!)

During the tour, Poan was very accommodating as before. Any sudden changes to the itinerary was accepted. This including calling a restaurant to arrange for takeaway when we were too tired and wanted to go back to the hotel for dinner. If he is going to be your tour guide, look out for his infamous "one, two, three, cheese!" when taking your photo. He also has many personal and funny stories to share. He is humble, sincere and has a great sense of humor. At least he laughed at all my jokes! After all these years, I am glad to call him a friend. Keep up with the good work Poan! Thanks again for a very memorable trip. We had a great time.

Amazingly great and super informative

I was supposed to go with Mr. Sophoan Rath on this trip, but sadly he had an urgent arrangement with his doctor. Truth to be told, I was a little upset at the beginning but it turned out to be fantastic at the end. I was told that his friend, who is a tour guide as well, will take care of me for the day. Unfortunately, I forgot his name, all I can remember is he wrote a book about Angkor Wat. Guess I don't have to explain how familiar he is with Angkor Wat and the history behind. I need to say a big thank you to him. I didn't have much time for Angkor Wat so I had to put everything in one day, sunrise, sunset and the most popular temples. He arranged an unusual route to me and spent a whole day from 4am till 6,7pm with me. That was a super intensive trip to me and I believe it was worse for him. Really appreciate what he did and the great arrangement of the tour. Ask Mr Sophoan Rath about him if you are looking for a professor of Angkor Wat.

Poan is the perfect guide.

My first trip to Cambodia was a few years ago and toured around the Siem Reap area and Poan was an amazing guide, the best I've ever had. He is genuinely friendly and is very professional. I've toured other areas of Cambodia on subsequent trips and again Poan made all the arrangements and we had a great time. He knowledge is so complete and adds many insights to the trip by explaining about Khmer history and culture.

I've had the opportunity to travel to many countries and had many guides throughout my years of traveling. Poan is the best there is! Richard C.

The Best Part of SE Asia Trip

As many have already expressed, Poan made my visit to Cambodia the highlight of my 2 weeks in SE Asia. From the time I arrived at the airport until I left, I did not have to worry about anything, which felt very good as a single traveler.

Although I only had 2 days, Poan arranged a thorough tour that showed me all the highlights and more. From spending all the first day at the temples to the second touring the countryside and seeing Cambodia life, Poan made the experience such that I now tell everyone they have to go to Cambodia and use Angkor Wat Services.

I have no words to express my greatest gratitude to Poan for the wonderful time I had exploring the most remote temples of the Khmer empire.

During the three-day tour I could get in touch not only with the architecture of Banteay Chhmar, Beng Mealea, Koh Ker and Preah Vihear, but also with people's beliefs and traditions, which, in the end, are what truly define the identity of Cambodia. Going up by foot to the temple of Preah Vihear is an experience that I highly recommend to anyone.

Thanks for everything Poan. You can be sure that I'll be back soon.

Trip Taken: Siem Reap July 15-18, 2010

I promised the best tour guide I ever had that I would write on his website. After 7 months, (sorry!) here I am!

Poan took my friend and I around Siem Reap to visit the Angkor Wat, Bayon, Ta Prohm, etc and the trip exceeded both of our expectations!

I have to compliment Poan as our tour guide. He made the trip excellent by providing great stories! He was kind and very patient with us. He took care of everything. We just had to relax and enjoy the tour. He always had cold water for us when we returned hot and thirsty from sightseeing. We missed the balloon ride the first two days due to windy and thunderstorm like conditions. He made sure we got on the last day and perhaps we were lucky, we were the only ones on the balloon! That was very special! My friend wanted to see the sunrise at Angkor Wat, which was off the itinerary, but he still arranged it. We also had a "fun" time going to the floating village. The boat driver was careless and caused an incident that involved people getting wet... but Poan did the best he could in that situation. He is the best tour guide I ever had in my life, even better than the ones I had in Europe, Thailand, Beijing and Japan. He was flexible and he treated us like friends, even enjoying a couple of laughs himself!

Thanks again for a great time!

The glorious temple of Angkor Wat was rediscovered in 1908. Since that time, thousands have flocked to Siem Reap, the center of the former Angkor Empire and home to hundreds of temples and lost cities. They have discovered as you will, the mysteries that this spot on the planet holds for many. Experience a traditional floating villages and markets as you make your way on the Tonle Sap, Asia's largest freshwater lake. There will be time to stop and shop, too!...

An inscription found at the temple provides a detailed account of Suryavarman II studying sacred rituals, celebrating religious festivals and making gifts, including white parasols, golden bowls and elephants, to his spiritual advisor, the aged Brahman Divakarapandita. The Brahman himself took an interest in the temple, according to the inscription, donating to it a golden statue of a dancing Shiva. In the wake of the decline of Hinduism in the region the site was converted to use by Buddhists....
