An inscription found at the temple provides a detailed account of Suryavarman II studying sacred rituals, celebrating religious festivals and making gifts, including white parasols, golden bowls and elephants, to his spiritual advisor, the aged Brahman Divakarapandita. The Brahman himself took an interest in the temple, according to the inscription, donating to it a golden statue of a dancing Shiva. Day I - Preah Vihear World Heritage Excursion and Khmer Rouge stronghold

Preah Vihear
– you will be met and welcomed by our English speaking guide at your preferred pick-up location and then transferred onward to visit Preah Vihear Temple. It is situated atop cliff in the Preah Vihear province of northern Cambodia (180 kilometers from Angkor Wat) and on the border of Kantharalak district (amphoe) in Sisaket province of eastern Thailand. In 1962, following a lengthy dispute between Thailand and Cambodia over ownership, a majority of the International Court of Justice in The Hague awarded the temple to Cambodia.

Affording a view for many kilometers across a plain, Prasat Preah Vihear has the most spectacular setting of all the temples built during the six-centuries-long Khmer Empire. As a key edifice of the empire's spiritual life, it was supported and modified by successive kings and so bears elements of several architectural styles. Preah Vihear is unusual among Khmer temples in being constructed along a long north-south axis, rather than having the conventional rectangular plan with orientation toward the east. The temple gives its name to Cambodia's Preah Vihear province, in which it is now located.

On July 7, 2008, Preah Vihear was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Construction of the first temple on the site began in the early 9th century; both then and in the following centuries it was dedicated to the Hindu god Shiva in his manifestations as the mountain gods Sikharesvara and Bhadresvara. The earliest surviving parts of the temple, however, date from the Koh Ker period in the early 10th century, when the empire's capital was at the city of that name.

Today, elements of the Banteay Srei style of the late 10th century can be seen, but most of the temple was constructed during the reigns of the Khmer kings Suryavarman I (1002 -1050) and Suryavarman II (1113 -1150). In the wake of the decline of Hinduism in the region the site was converted to use by Buddhists.

Ta Mok
- continue driving through Ta Mok's house, born Chhit Choeun, 1926 – 21 July 2006) was a Cambodian military chief and soldier who was a senior figure in the Khmer Rouge and the leader of the national army of Democratic Kampuchea. He was best known as "Brother Number Five" or "the Butcher". He was captured along the Thailand-Cambodia border in March 1999 by Cambodian government forces while on the run with a small band of followers and was held in government custody all the way to his death in 2006 while awaiting his war crime trial.

He is believed to have been born into a prosperous country family from Takéo Province, and was of Chinese-Khmer descent. He became a Buddhist monk in the 1930s but left the order at the age of 16. Ta Mok took part in the resistance against French colonial rule and then the anti-Japanese resistance during the 1940s. He was training for the Buddhist priesthood in Pali when he joined the anti-French Khmer Issarak in 1952. He soon left Phnom Penh and joined the Khmer Rouge.

By the late 1960s he was a general and the Khmer Rouge's chief-of-staff. He was also a member of the Standing Committee of the Khmer Rouge's Central Committee ("Party Center") during its period in power. He became very powerful within the party, especially in the south-west zone. He was named by Pol Pot as leader of the national army of Democratic Kampuchea. He lost the lower part of one leg in fighting around 1970.

Ta Mok is believed to have orchestrated many massacres within the zone he controlled from 1973, beginning before the final, complete seizure of power by the Khmer Rouge on April 17, 1975. He was also responsible of directing the massive purges that characterised the short-lived Democratic Kampuchea (1975–1979), including the mass killing of 30,000 people in the Angkor Chey district, earning him the nickname Butcher.

After the regime was overthrown in 1979, Ta Mok remained a powerful figure, controlling the northern area of the Khmer Rouge's remaining territory from his base at Anlong Veng in the Dângrêk Mountains. It is estimated that some 3,000 to 5,000 combatants remained loyal to Pol Pot and were directed by Ta Mok.

In 1997, after a split in the party, Ta Mok seized control of one faction and named himself supreme commander. Pol Pot then fled the Khmer Rouge's northern stronghold, but was later arrested and sentenced to lifelong house arrest. In April 1998, after a new government attack, Ta Mok fled into the forest and took Pol Pot with him. A few days later, on 15 April 1998, Pol Pot died in custody.

In 1998, after several key defections, Ta Mok was forced to flee to Anlong Veng. On 6 March 1999, the general was captured by the Cambodian army near the Thai border and brought to Phnom Penh, where he joined former comrade Khang Khek Ieu ("Duch") at the Military Prosecution Department Detention Facility. Ta Mok was the last leading member of the Khmer Rouge to remain at large in Cambodia; other senior figures had died or already made immunity deals with the government of Hun Sen, including Nuon Chea, Khieu Samphan and Ieng Sary.

In prison his detention period was repeatedly extended without his being brought to trial. Under Cambodian law his trial should have begun within six months of his arrest. First charged with membership of an outlawed group and tax evasion, in February 2002 he was charged with crimes against humanity. In poor health, suffering especially from respiratory problems, Ta Mok's only releases from solitary confinement were for hospital visits. On 21 July 2006, due to heart complications caused by the stress of the upcoming trial, he died in a military hospital after falling into a coma.

During the night of your stay in Siem Reap, you can enjoy Siem Reap nightlife, night markets, foods and other fun activities in Siem Reap downtown, Pub Street areas and city formerly French colonial head quarter.

Third Memorable Trip with Poan!

Poan (Sophoan) was my personal guide in Siem Reap during my visit in 2010 and 2012. Since my travel buddy wanted to visit Angkor Wat, I sent Poan an email to inform him approximately 4-5 months in advance, to ensure we secured a spot on his busy calendar!

Planning the itinerary with Poan was easy. He responded quickly and made recommendations based on our preferences. As mentioned, this was my third visit but the first for my friend. We needed a mixture of popular tourist favorites as well as remote temples to tour.

This time we ventured all the way to Preah Vihear, near the Thai and Laos border. Poan made all the arrangements including a very good lunchbox from Blue Pumpkin (since he knew I am a picky eater). Very satisfactory! The only complaint I had was that we should have visited Beng Mealea first to conserve sunlight and then go to Preah Vihear after lunch. This way, the sun would set on the drive back and not while we were visiting Beng Mealea. I felt we didn't spend enough time at my favorite temple (which turned out to my travel buddy's favorite too!)

During the tour, Poan was very accommodating as before. Any sudden changes to the itinerary was accepted. This including calling a restaurant to arrange for takeaway when we were too tired and wanted to go back to the hotel for dinner. If he is going to be your tour guide, look out for his infamous "one, two, three, cheese!" when taking your photo. He also has many personal and funny stories to share. He is humble, sincere and has a great sense of humor. At least he laughed at all my jokes! After all these years, I am glad to call him a friend. Keep up with the good work Poan! Thanks again for a very memorable trip. We had a great time.

Siem reap with Sophoan Rath (POAN) - Wonderful !!!

Our friends recommended Poan as a guide for 2 ½ days in Siem Reap. It was the best thing we could realized. He sent us a perfect schedule for the tour. He is a very smart, sensitive and a very special man. Talking with him we felt how the Cambodia is proud of the Kmehr Civilization very old and important for more than thousand years. We advised everyone that want to know Cambodia as we did to contact Poan as a guide.

Poan is the perfect guide.

My first trip to Cambodia was a few years ago and toured around the Siem Reap area and Poan was an amazing guide, the best I've ever had. He is genuinely friendly and is very professional. I've toured other areas of Cambodia on subsequent trips and again Poan made all the arrangements and we had a great time. He knowledge is so complete and adds many insights to the trip by explaining about Khmer history and culture.

I've had the opportunity to travel to many countries and had many guides throughout my years of traveling. Poan is the best there is! Richard C.

Probably the most memorable place I've ever visited.

My girlfriend and I visited Siem Reap/Angkor Wat in February of 2011. We spent four days visiting this beautiful part of the world after having spent a week in Thailand. If you ever have the opportunity to visit this breathtaking area, take it! It will take your breath away!

I cannot say enough about our wonderful tour guide, Poan of Angkor Wat Services. This personable, soft-spoken man was a wealth of information. There are many temples available to visit, and Poan was very knowledgeable about all of them. He always made sure that we understood our agenda and was prompt when showing up at our hotel to pick us up in the morning. In addition to accompanying us on our trips to Ankgor Wat, Ankgor Thom, and other temples, he also took the time to stop along the trip back to meet with local residents to get a feel for the way they live their lives. Poan took a genuine interest in the way that we perceived his homeland. The pride that this man has in his country is obvious, and will leave you with a lasting impression of Cambodia. His natural curiosity was refreshing; he wanted to know as much about us as we did of Cambodia. He and I had several wonderful conversations about his family and his country

All in all, a beautiful country, wonderful guide and memories that will last a lifetime!

I have no words to express my greatest gratitude to Poan for the wonderful time I had exploring the most remote temples of the Khmer empire.

During the three-day tour I could get in touch not only with the architecture of Banteay Chhmar, Beng Mealea, Koh Ker and Preah Vihear, but also with people's beliefs and traditions, which, in the end, are what truly define the identity of Cambodia. Going up by foot to the temple of Preah Vihear is an experience that I highly recommend to anyone.

Thanks for everything Poan. You can be sure that I'll be back soon.

Trip Taken: Siem Reap July 15-18, 2010

I promised the best tour guide I ever had that I would write on his website. After 7 months, (sorry!) here I am!

Poan took my friend and I around Siem Reap to visit the Angkor Wat, Bayon, Ta Prohm, etc and the trip exceeded both of our expectations!

I have to compliment Poan as our tour guide. He made the trip excellent by providing great stories! He was kind and very patient with us. He took care of everything. We just had to relax and enjoy the tour. He always had cold water for us when we returned hot and thirsty from sightseeing. We missed the balloon ride the first two days due to windy and thunderstorm like conditions. He made sure we got on the last day and perhaps we were lucky, we were the only ones on the balloon! That was very special! My friend wanted to see the sunrise at Angkor Wat, which was off the itinerary, but he still arranged it. We also had a "fun" time going to the floating village. The boat driver was careless and caused an incident that involved people getting wet... but Poan did the best he could in that situation. He is the best tour guide I ever had in my life, even better than the ones I had in Europe, Thailand, Beijing and Japan. He was flexible and he treated us like friends, even enjoying a couple of laughs himself!

Thanks again for a great time!

The glorious temple of Angkor Wat was rediscovered in 1908. Since that time, thousands have flocked to Siem Reap, the center of the former Angkor Empire and home to hundreds of temples and lost cities. They have discovered as you will, the mysteries that this spot on the planet holds for many. Experience a traditional floating villages and markets as you make your way on the Tonle Sap, Asia's largest freshwater lake. There will be time to stop and shop, too!...

Like Angkor Thom, the temple of Banteay Chhmar was accomplished during the reign of Jayavarman VII in the late 12th or early 13th century. One of the temple's shrines once held an image of Srindrakumararajaputra (the crown prince), a son of Jayavarman VII who died before him. The temple doors record Yasovarman I's failed invasion of Champa. The long Old Khmer inscription found at the site (K.227), and now on display in the National Museum, Phnom Penh, relates how Prince Srindrakumara was protected on two different occasions by four companions in arms, once against Rahu, and once on a military campaign against Champa....
