Siem Reap - Battambang

In Sanskrit, the word "puya" is a Buddhist term for "merit." We earn "merit" when we do something that helps others. Make this journey to Cambodia an adventure that will not only earn you merit but will bring joy to your heart as well!

On this six-day charitable Cambodia tour, you will not only experience the wondrous architecture of Angkor Wat and the natural charm of Battambang, but will have the unique opportunity of visiting and supporting some local charities.

Your stay in Siem Reap for the first three days will allow you to explore the glories of the ancient Khmer empire: the temples of Angkor. With your expert guide(s), you will learn about the history and mystery that surrounds the glorious religious structures of Angkor Wat, Bayon, Banteay Srei and Ta Phrom. During your stay in Siem Reap, there will be many opportunities for you to visit locally-run charities. You will also visit  The Landmine Museum, where you can learn more about the on-going efforts to de-mine our country and support victims of these unexploded ordinances. Sala Bai Restaurant is another "puya" opportunity. By dining here you not only enjoy delicious Khmer cuisine, but also help in the vocational training of Cambodian underprivileged children.

Travel by boat on the Tonle Sap Lake and Sangker River to Battambang, near the Thai border. This quiet town is filled with French colonial buildings and has a natural charm you won't soon forget. In the evening, visit Phare Ponleu Selpak, an organization helping disadvantaged youth. Their art's center is a must-see! On Thursday nights we will the opportunity to attend an original circus created by the children. This will certainly be a major highlight of your Cambodian tour.

The next morning, we will ride the justly-famous and unique "bamboo train" through the countryside for a thrilling journey past rice fields and small villages. We will pay a visit to Meahto Phum Ko'mah, a not-for-profit NGO ("Nongovernmental Organization") working hard to reintegrate vulnerable children back into society. Shopping for beautifully fashioned handicrafts at the center and dining at the training-restaurant has a direct impact on the charity's activities.

On the fifth day of your adventure, we return to Siem Reap by road in the late afternoon . Before departing, there is an option to visit Artisans d'Angkor where techniques of Khmer traditional arts and crafts are being kept alive through training programs and workshops for the handicapped.

As your adventure nears its end, you will certainly have accrued enough "puya" to last a lifetime! But equally as important as merit, is the joy that you will carry with you always knowing that you have made a profound difference in the lives of the people of Cambodia. If you wish to explore more of our country, may we recommend an extension to Phnom Penh or a journey to Cambodia's south coast?
